Weatherbeard
& other folk stories

REVIEWS
from the first release

“Rich, full of images and details; humorous and just scary enough... Jennings personalizes his telling while remaining true to the letter and spirit of the traditional tales. His style is natural, easy, and inviting. In a voice filled with color and nuance, he beckons us to listen, drawing adults as well as children into the timeless realms of the folktale.” School Library Journal

“Funny, rollicking, suspenseful, outrageous. Classify him, as far as I’m concerned, with the best of the true storytellers.”
Chinaberry Book Service.

“A rare thing, a tape you cannot, upon any invocation of willpower, resist listening to.”
Sam Bartlett,

"My name is Dave M**, I'm 28 years old. I went to elementary school in Canaan, VT. About 20 years ago I think you came to my school to tell a few stories. I would like to buy recordings of them but I only remember very vague details. I was hoping you could help me with the names and then of course if you had them available for purchase I would buy them.

"The first story was about a man and his pregnant wife and her craving for radishes. The only ones available were over a wall in a witch's yard.

"The next was a story where a man finds himself in a pit or well with a eagle and needed to ride him out of the well or pit with bits of meat towards the top he runs out of meat and needs to cut off a part if himself to throw so the eagle will continue to fly.

"There was also one about a witch the used snuff that caused her to sneeze.

"(I hope you're the person I am thinking of or these story fragments would seem insane)

"I would be interested in any of the stories you were telling during that time, late 80's early 90's.

"I just wanted you to know that those stories have stuck with me for over 20 years. I couldn't tell you anything about a TV show I had seen that long ago. If those stories I had mentioned are available I hope to pass the on to my children someday."

"Utterly timeless... (his) warm baritone shape-shifts to the voices of every character in his fantastical stories, from a thunderous boom to a bloodcurdling growl to a squeaky scritch... Captivating to listeners of all ages."

"The re-mastered and gorgeously packaged CD version of [Jennings'] on-the-edge-of-your-seat debut recording. Put it on for a car ride or in front of the fireplace some night and you’ll be transported by a master story teller to faraway lands on the edge of your imagination. The music between the tales proves that his old-time band, The Sweet Corn Broadcasters, could’ve easily made a record on their own and features the only known recording of one of the best fiddlers in our state, the elusive Franklin Heyburn.

Montpelier

When we were children, my sister and I were given a tape entitled “Farmer Weatherbeard.” We fell in love with it, and drove our folks crazy demanding to hear it on every car ride. I was so excited to find your website. I’ve been looking to buy the CD for my sister for Christmas. She’s gonna flip! Enclosed is a check including shipping and handling. If it’s not too much trouble could you please autograph it? Thanks so much for your stories and tons of memories! HOW TO BUY

folktales are ageless

Tim had been a a full time solo storyteller for many years by the time he met the charming poet, Leanne, with a strong local following, frequent appearances on Vermont Public Television and radio, a regular spot in Bread and Puppet's summer circus, and hundreds of performances all around Northern New England.

He had tried repeatedly to make an audio recording of his unique approach to folk storytelling, and finally succeeded when he and Leanne became a couple.

The recording was issued as a cassette in the mid eighties, sold a couple thousand copies, acquired some die-hard fans, and received excellent reviews. Within a year of its release, Tim and Leanne had begun their artistic collaboration, which continues to this day. Weatherbeard was digitally remastered and is being released nationwide on CD and as a download in January 2011.
